J.E. Sills is a writer, editor and former journalist. Her fiction and creative nonfiction have appeared in StoryQuarterly, Joyland, McSweeney’s, Auburn Avenue and Upstreet Magazine. Her debut fiction, THEM MOON GODS, is a literary novel with elements of Afro-surrealism and is part road trip, part hoodoo detective story and a little playful.  As well, Joanne is developing a memoir-driven CNF about the search for her maternal grandfather's bones. THE FINAL GRAVE OF JOSEPH CAIN places her personal journey in the context of the national bone repatriation movement of Black and indigenous peoples. She is a daughter of the Great Black Migration, born and raised in New York City with ancestral roots in East Texas/Appalachia and Georgia. 

 

Joanne is a Yaddo and Kimbilio fellow. Her work has also received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Virgina Center for the Creative Arts, Diverse

Voices Scholarship (Author Accelerator) and  Vermont College of Fine Arts Postgraduate Conference.
